Movie Poster
I am parenting a teenage girl. This means that my house is in constant turmoil enduring one major crisis after another. Several times each day I find myself wondering where my lovely little girl went. She insists that she is treated like a baby and she wants to wear clothes that are more adult like and have her room redone to be less childish. My husband and I agreed that having her redo her room may make her feel better. I asked my daughter to spend a Saturday morning with me to pick out paint color as well as fabric for curtains. She was very excited about this and even gave me a hug in her excitement. On Saturday morning she was dressed and ready to go with out me having to nag her. She came out to the car carrying a rolled paper. When I asked what she had she told me it was a movie poster that she wanted to match her paint to. She has been engrossed with the gory horror films so I was sure there was going to be a battle. My hope was that she would find a color that she liked without getting too attached to the movie poster theme. I told her that she could pick out a framed picture to go in her room, but she insisted that the movie poster had to be part of her room. I did not want our day together to start out with an argument so I dropped the subject and we proceeded to the home improvement store. We went to the paint section and my daughter started to unroll her movie poster. I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a poster from the Wizard of Oz. I told her that I had the same poster when I was growing up. She started laughing and told me it was my poster. She found it at my mom’s house and my mom told her that she could have it. We picked out a shade of blue that matched Dorothy’s dress. We then went to the framing section and found a frame for the movie poster. When we arrived at the fabric store we found gingham fabric that matched Dorothy’s dress. I told my daughter that I would make her curtains to the floor and that she could have white sheers in the middle. She thought this would make her room look more adult like. The clerk heard us talking and showed us an appliqué of ruby slippers that we could adhere to metal brackets to use as tie backs. This gave my daughter the idea to use all red accents in her room. We painted the room the next day and throughout the week we finished the curtains and accent pieces that she had chosen. We then hung the movie poster in its place of honor above her desk. For now she is happy with her room make over and her mother.
