It has been a few months, but I remember the day my friend sent me an instant message to tell me her horrifying encounter with someone who sells Mark Kay cosmetics. She wasn’t sure if she should be insulted or if she should laugh. I realize those that sell Mary Kay are out to make a sale, and that sometimes they might try to push the hard sell through, but this had to be some of the worst salesmanship I had ever heard. There comes a time when your hard sell turns into something too personal and you have just lost that person forever. There’s nothing you can do to make them buy.

My friend was invited to a home party to have a look at some of the Mary Kay cosmetics and other items at another friends home. The seller did her thing, showing off what they had and demonstrating the items. It was probably your average Mary Kay cosmetics pitch. I know many times I go to something like this because a friend begged me to, though I have no intention of buying anything. My friend, however, was looking for something like a moisturizer that might actually work.

As the demonstration wore on, the saleswoman seemed to target my friend, perhaps sensing that a sale was hanging in the air. It’s like she could smell it, reported my friend. She started saying that her face was horrible, but luckily for her, it was easily fixed with Mary Kay cosmetics. My friend tried to suppress her laughter, knowing full well it was a pitch, but then it started to get very personal. The saleswomen told her that if she didn’t buy these six items from Mary Kay cosmetics (yes, that’s right, there were six expensive items she was pushing) then she was doomed to have a sagging, open-pored, wrinkled face for the rest of her miserable days.

My friend, sensing the woman’s desperation and feeling more than a little put off, declined the items and spent the rest of the next hour chatting with other friends. She had been put off of Mary Kay cosmetics at this point, and there was nothing anyone could have done to convince her to buy. The icing on the cake was when the salesperson was outside packing her car to leave, she pulled the host of the party aside and said, “She really needs this stuff. What are we going to do?” This line was delivered with a look of horror and the women pleaded with the host to change my friends mind about buying the Mary Kay cosmetics items she wanted her to buy. The drama was too much for my friend, who left feeling a little more than humiliated. I’m not saying all Mary Kay cosmetics salespersons are this way, but make sure you let them know if they have overstepped the line.
